Rain, Rain, Drain Away

                 Thursday, January 26, 3:00 - 4:30 pm, Virtual

President Biden made an emergency declaration for California counties impacted by winter storms that caused widespread flooding, mudslides, high winds, and power outages. As San Mateo County begins its recovery journey, we invite stakeholders to reconsider what we know about a "typical" flood event and explore methods for radically reducing our future flood risk through nature-based solutions. Join our panel of experts to learn about the complexity of calculating flood risk, regulatory frameworks for mandating green infrastructure, and community-implemented nature-based solutions.

Thrive Alliance Community Resilience Director, Ana Miscolta, leading the San Mateo County COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster), will moderate our panel of experts:

  •
    • OneShoreline Project Manager, Makena Wong, will present an overview of flood risk in San Mateo County and categories of mitigation.
    • County/City Association of Governments (C/CAG) for San Mateo County Senior Program Specialist, Reid Bogert, will address the regulatory framework for and government implementation of green infrastructure.
    • Climate Resilient Communities Resilient Adaptation Program Manager, Cade Cannedy, will share a case study of locally-implemented green infrastructure and recommend duplicating those efforts in other communities.
    • Peninsula Clean Energy Senior Manager of Community Relations, Kirsten Andrews-Schwind, will share the Home Upgrade programs available to residents who have been affected by the storms.
    • Resource Conservation District San Mateo Executive Director, Kellyx Nelson, will present their work on nature-based solutions for climate mitigation, watershed protection to mitigate disasters, and emergency response to mitigate hazards after a fire or flooding.
  • Following that, we will open up to discussion.
