ABOUT THE THRIVING NONPROFIT WORKFORCE INITIATIVE
The Thriving Nonprofit Workforce Initiative (TNWI) was established in September 2023 to address pressing workforce challenges faced by the nonprofit sector in San Mateo County, most notably recruitment and retention. TNWI seeks to raise awareness of these challenges and foster a shared commitment from local stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to the nonprofit workforce. Through generating and implementing practical, community tailored recruitment strategies, Thrive strives to strengthen nonprofits’ paid and volunteer workforce. In January 2025, Thrive launched the Nonprofit Learning Community, a cohort of organizations dedicated to advancing their skills in human resources and workforce development.
In a time of shifting funding streams, rising costs of living, and increasing pressure on community-based services, nonprofits are being called to deliver more with less. This coincides with the continued struggles nonprofits face to recruit and retain committed, mission-aligned talent. Through the Initiative, we’ve heard consistently that nonprofit leaders are looking for trusted spaces to reflect and collaborate on how we can uplift our teams in uncertain times. Our events are designed with this feedback and the goals of TNWI to raise awareness and share practical strategies to elevate nonprofit workforce development.
