Building a Successful Advocacy Campaign

Monday, February 26, 3:00 - 5:00 pm, Virtual

Join Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) for Building a Successful Advocacy Campaign. This hands-on workshop will guide participants through developing a comprehensive advocacy campaign plan.

What you will learn in this workshop:

  • What are the key elements of an advocacy campaign: roles, purpose, needs, strategies, timeline, and tactics
  • How to map the political landscape including who will be the allies and opponents of your campaign—often called “power mapping”
  • How to develop a champion, such as an elected official, to be the face of your campaign
  • How to counter opposition to your policy idea
  • Walk through a mock campaign to learn how the key elements might be applied in practice
You will also be introduced to the importance of coalition-building that might be a necessary component of your campaign. We'll do a deep dive into coalition building in a future workshop.Lastly, you'll be introduced to how familiarity with government players and legislative advocacy will be necessary to succeed in your campaign. Again, we'll have a special workshop devoted just to legislative and government advocacy.Learn more about our presenters, Vaughn Villaverde and Evvy Stivers, both of whom are seasoned campaigners, below.

This workshop is the second workshop in the Nonprofit Advocacy Series—brought to you by Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits, thanks to a grant from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
